Why we started selling these

We support the IT and cameras for a few hundred New England businesses. Every winter the same thing happens: a nor'easter takes out power for two or three days, and we spend the week fielding calls about dead recorders, spoiled inventory and offices that cannot take a phone call. A battery system solves all three, and unlike a generator it does not require anyone to go outside.

Gas generators keep killing people

Carbon monoxide poisoning during outages is a recurring New England tragedy, usually from a generator run in a garage or too near a window. A battery has no exhaust at all.

How to size it without overspending

The single most common mistake is buying by sticker capacity instead of by load. Here is the honest math for a New England house. These are working estimates to frame the conversation — we confirm real draw during the assessment, because a well pump or electric heat changes everything.

Two things worth knowing. Surge matters as much as capacity — a well pump or compressor draws several times its running watts for a second at startup, and a unit that cannot deliver that surge will simply refuse the load. And solar recharging in a Massachusetts December is a fraction of the rated panel output, so we size the array on winter numbers rather than the number on the box.

Where a battery is the wrong answer

We would rather tell you now than sell you the wrong thing.

If you need to run electric heat or central air for days, buy a standby generator

Sustained multi-kilowatt heating and cooling loads are simply outside what a battery system covers economically — you would be buying 40+ kWh of storage to do what a permanently installed propane or natural gas standby generator does for less. A battery is the right tool for keeping essentials alive: refrigeration, heat controls and blower, internet, medical equipment, lighting, phones and your camera system. If your list is longer than that, we will tell you to call an electrician instead, and we are happy to recommend one.

Questions we get asked

How big a battery do I need for a New England outage?

It depends entirely on what you insist on keeping alive. A fridge, internet, phones, a few lights and a gas furnace blower is roughly 2 to 3 kWh per day, so a 3 kWh unit covers a typical one-day outage and an expandable system covers a multi-day nor'easter. Electric heat, a well pump or central air changes the math completely. We do a load assessment first, because oversizing wastes thousands and undersizing means you find out at 2am in January.

Can I run it indoors?

Yes — that is the main advantage over a gas generator. LiFePO4 systems produce no exhaust, no carbon monoxide and almost no noise, so they run in a basement, a utility closet, or beside your desk.

How is this different from a whole-home standby generator?

A standby generator is wired to your panel, starts automatically and runs on gas or propane. It covers more load but costs far more and needs permitting, an electrician and annual service. A battery is portable, needs no permit or fuel, and covers what you plug into it. For most households wanting the essentials covered without a five-figure project, the battery wins.

Do solar panels work in a Massachusetts winter?

They work, but slower — expect meaningfully less than rated output on a short overcast December day, and nothing under snow. Solar is what extends you through a multi-day outage, not what powers you day to day. We size the array on winter numbers.

How long do the batteries last?

Bluetti uses LiFePO4 cells rated for thousands of cycles before dropping to 80% of original capacity. For backup use, where you might cycle a handful of times a year, that is a very long service life — and it is a more thermally stable chemistry than laptop lithium-ion.

Will it keep my security cameras running?

Yes, and it is the pairing we recommend most. Recorder, PoE switch, modem and router together are usually well under 150 watts, so even a modest battery keeps cameras recording and remotely viewable for days. Break-ins do not wait for the power to come back.
